When analyzing your plan for cost savings, here are a few key questions that must be addressed initially to ensure an effective plan.
1. Should you self-insure or be fully insured by an insurance company?
2. What can be done to educate employees on usage, in order to reduce cost?
3. What services should your ASO or insurer provide to manage utilization, increase administrative ease, and efficiently pay claims?

Since no one wants to imagine the backlash evident by increasing employee contributions, non-traditional cost containment mechanisms should be given plenty of thought. Try bundling benefits with one carrier, cutting plans less used, educating employees on how to properly use benefits, or using premium discounts to counter behaviors known to wreck experience ratings.

We recommend looking at the bigger goals first then building in your smaller wishes. Don’t forget to take into consideration the entire process not individual pieces. This will not only save you administrative time, but will make benefits less confusing for your employees.
